Why I Like My Age

Looking back at a different time

First of all, being older now means that my youth was spend in a different time. As children we were allowed to roam free. We would play outside for hours until it got dark and we were expected to be home.

No one hovered over us. I think in this day and age, our parents would have been arrested for child neglect. At the very least, today’s parents would be nervous if they did not see their children all afternoon or even all day on weekends.

I even remember spending some nights outside in a neighbor’s garden, excited to perhaps see Sputnik overhead and then falling asleep under the stars, three of us on simple cots.

When we were teenagers, there were no cell phones. No one took pictures of us doing stupid things such as jumping out of a second story barn window onto a mattress below.

When we traveled, we saw. We looked and discovered with our own eyes and not filtered through a lens. Sure, we took some pictures with our cameras, but we experienced so much more.

I feel sorry for all of those “influencers” who take so many pictures with their cell phones but never see the essence of anything.

College was affordable, and people cared about learning, discussing their differences, and debating the merits of each…
