What is Luxury?

Not what you think

During the holiday season, we see so many advertisements for luxury items: Louis Vuitton handbags, Mercedes cars, Patek Philippe watches, Levian jewelry. But do these watches and handbags really constitute luxury?

Here are some real luxuries I enjoyed today

  • It is 18 degrees Fahrenheit outside, but I am nice and warm in my house.
  • I did not have to work or do any chores today. I could allow my body’s natural rhythm to wake me when it was ready.
  • I had a nutritious breakfast, a nice home-cooked dinner, and wonderful tea; and I didn’t have to rush through my meals.
  • I had the luxury to have two hours of uninterrupted reading time.
  • I called a friend, a true friend of mine, and we chatted for an hour.
  • I took a leisurely bath and lit some candles.
  • I took a nap in the afternoon for no reason — and woke up refreshed.
  • I watched the lovely Christmas lights on my neighbors’ houses.
  • I didn’t have to worry about anything.

Instead of yearning for these so-called luxury goods, perhaps we should value the little luxuries many of us can enjoy every day.
