Publishing on Medium

Submit to publication or self publish?

When I started on Medium, I tried to be accepted to as many publications as possible. Why not? Some publications have thousands of readers, and that could be to my advantage.

However, soon I noticed that not every publication offers that advantage. I loved being invited to a new publication just on poetry, but it didn’t survive long. I tried to submit last year, but nothing new has been published there for over two years.

This has happened more than once. I assume — since every Medium member can start a publication, some survive and some do not.

It was also very time consuming to get accepted by some publications. I never did get anything published by The Start-up even when I submitted an article about my friend’s new business and her challenges. I waited for a month and then finally unsubmitted the article.

After I had a few hundred followers, I tried publishing some articles myself. Well, the first time happened by accident when I accidentally clicked on “submit.” In the few times I did, I expected fewer readers, but that didn’t seem to be the case.

Recently it has taken longer for articles submitted to publications to actually be published. I submitted one two days ago, and it is still pending. Therefore, I self…
