Halloween Surprise

Evidence that kids are less fit these days?

I bought quite a bit of candy in preparation for the annual trick-or-treat ritual that is so popular in the U. S. and in our neighborhood. I usually get 40–50 kids at my house, and I don’t like to run out as I did one year.

This year, I had some online work to finish, so I did not sit outside, in front of my garage, as I usually do.

However, all my outside lights were on, and my doorbell was working fine and loud enough to hear it in my office. I didn’t have a giant illuminated pumpkin as my neighbor did, but I had a few Halloween decorations up.

My office has a good view of the street, and I soon saw something surprising. The houses across the street, all ranch-style houses, got a lot more action than my house.

O.k., the house to the left of mine was dark, but that should not have mattered much. However, all the houses on my side of the street are bi-level or two-story builds. You have to climb some stairs to get to the front door.

I understand that the little ones may not want to climb the eight steps, but then, they can usually manage. But what about all the older kids, the middle and high school students? Why were they reluctant to climb a few steps?
