Generosity
Not just on holidays!
So close to Christmas everyone is reminded of the importance of generosity. Salvation Army kettles and ringing bells remind people to donate to a good cause.
Campaigns on Facebook, requests by school (and community programs) express the hope that people will find that kind place in their hearts to open their wallets.
I put money into every Salvation kettle this month, even it was at three locations during a single day. I donated to our local Parents as Teachers program since children need to get a good start. I was very generous to my family and friends these last few years.
Giving feels good.
Therefore, we should not limit it to Christmas. In fact, “giving” should be part of every budget. After all, there are three things we can logically do with money. We can spend it, save (and invest it), or donate it. I think we need to do all three every single month.
We do need to spend some money on ourselves. I tried to be too frugal for a while, and it got old. We need to save and invest for short-term goals and for retirement. We also need to give so that we don’t become to self-centered.
Giving is a line item in my budget. I like to keep it local where I live. If we all take care of our communities, everyone will be better off.
Whatever we value, there is a way to donate. We can give to our church, our animal shelters, local food bank, or support the local library. The possibilities are endless.
Find something and be generous! If you cannot donate money, donate your time, which is just as valuable!
